Josh’s Story

Josh faced significant challenges growing up. His family struggled with drug problems, his mum was diagnosed with cancer, and he was excluded from school. The unsupportive school environment left him with low self-esteem, repeatedly telling him he wouldn't get far in life. But Josh proved them wrong.

Early Challenges

Josh grew up in a family struggling with drug problems, which led to frequent misbehaviour at school and eventual exclusion from most lessons. This disrupted his education and left him with low self-esteem, especially since he was constantly told he wouldn't achieve anything. Compounding his difficulties, Josh's mum was diagnosed with cancer, adding immense stress to an already challenging situation.

Finding a Path in Construction

Before his GCSEs, Josh tried weekend work in construction but found it tough due to his age. Fortunately, Martin Hargreaves from Archcraft Construction saw potential in Josh and offered him a full-time position, along with an apprenticeship that included college education.

Josh enrolled at Bradford College for a Level 2 NVQ City and Guilds bricklaying course, where he excelled. Encouraged by his tutor, he entered bricklaying competitions, winning one and placing fourth in another. These competitions not only improved his skills but also connected him with peers from similar backgrounds, giving him a sense of belonging he never felt at school.

Working for a small construction company, Josh honed his communication and teamwork skills by interacting with customers and representing the company. This role helped him understand and respect different cultures, boosting his confidence in dealing with people.

A Promising Future

Josh has since passed his GCSEs in Maths and English. His boss describes him as reliable, studious, and focused on his future development. Josh consistently produces excellent work, often achieving distinctions and taking pride in his craft. His dedication is evident, having represented Bradford College at the Guild of Bricklayers Yorkshire section competition in Doncaster. Remarkably, he returned from a holiday in Spain, arriving home at 2:30 am with only three hours of sleep, and still secured a top-four position in the competition.

Despite his past struggles, Josh's hard work and determination have set him on a path to a bright future, with many opportunities ahead.
