Patron’s Event 2017

Patrons’ Event 9th March 2017

Guests networking at the Patrons’ Event

Over 60 guests attended our Patrons’ Event held in the River Room, at the House of Lords, on Thursday, 9th March 2017. The event was very kindly sponsored by our President, the Rt Hon, the Baroness Smith of Basildon. We heard from a variety of speakers about why they had become involved with Youthbuild UK and supported our aims of “Promoting engagement with young people to combat social exclusion, through the development of construction based support services, and celebrate young people’s success”.

Baroness Smith told how she first heard of Youthbuild UK when serving on the cross parliamentary report “No more last generations – creating constructions jobs for young people” with our past President Nick Raynsford, then attended a Young Builder of the Year Awards and heard the stories about our finalists, which led to her becoming our President.

Six years ago Stephen Ratcliffe, then the Director of UKCG, was approached to be the Chair of the Judging Panel for the Young Builder of the Year Awards – he found that reading the applications was a “humbling experience”. He became a Trustee in 2015 and then our Chair in 2016.

Judy Cobham-Lowe OBE, Director Women into Construction and longstanding Judge of the Young Builder of the Year Awards was another who had been inspired by the stories of the barriers that applicants for the Young Builder of the Year Awards had to overcome

After attending the 2010 Young Builder of the Year Awards and hearing the winner, Omar Cila’s story, Kevin O’Connor of Durkan,  was inspired by what we do, he is now a Trustee. He told how Durkan support young people, including the 2016 winner Chidi Nnebe .

Adian Paul-Coker, Barnardo’s Hub Construction Skills Centre, Stepney Green described the difficulties of working with disaffected, disengaged young people on a day to day basis, and how with a great deal of patience and encouragement they can helped back onto the right track.

Our final speaker,Rebecca Russell, Runner up of the 2015 Young Builder of the Year Awards told us of her journey from a very troubled home life, to becoming a plumber with Durkan Serviceplan and being chosen as the 2017 Tradeswoman of the Year

Many thanks to everyone who attended
