More Training Required to Meet Demand for Construction Workers
In his address to the Young Builder of the Year Awards, at the House of Commons on 15th October 2014, Rt Hon Nick Raynsford MP, President of Youthbuild UK, highlighted the skills shortage facing the Construction industry. He expained that in every recession training and apprenticeships were severely curtailed and that tens of thousands of older workers left the industry, never to return. Therefore when construction demand picked up a huge skills gap occurred – this currently stood at 200,000 jobs. He said that we need to encourage more young people to enter the industry and that the finalists at today’s Awards were great examples of how this demand could be met.
Stephen Ratcliffe, Chair of the Judging Panel and Director of the UK Contractors Group (UKCG) emphasised this by saying that all the major UK contractors were facing a skills shortage. Paul High, Managing Director of Orbit Housing, Paul Chandler, Executive Vice President of Skanska UK and David Shaw, Director of Places for People all highlighted the need for young people to train for and enter the construction industry to meet the demand they had within their organisations.
